Five Business Lessons from Batman

As an entrepreneur, you move fast. So fast, that you always need to keep your mind open to business lessons wherever and whenever you can get them.

This week, I wanted to share a few of those business lessons from an unusual source: Batman.

In this short video I share five critical lessons on entrepreneurship anyone in any business can learn from the Dark Knight.

Action Steps:

  1. View this video and ask yourself the following questions about your business:
    • Have I located my right hand person, my Alfred, yet?
    • Have I invested in the best technology possible?
    • Have I created a clear dividing line between my entrepreneurial life and my personal life?
    • Am I regularly growing my network?
    • Does my business have a clearly defined set of values that we use for day-to-day decision making?
  2. On this page, share any other business lessons you’ve gained from Batman or your favorite fictional characters. Thanks!

Principles:

  1. Entrepreneurs can always be on the lookout for business lessons—even from fictional characters.
  2. A dedicated personal assistant can free your time so you can focus on your Most Valuable Activities (MVAs).
  3. The cost of investing in the best technology often makes up for itself through huge time gains.
  4. If your entrepreneurial life and personal life lack a boundary line, the two can bleed into each other, damaging both.
  5. Often, the resources you need to succeed in business lie within your network, not yourself.
  6. Written business values can be an important guidepost for decision making.
  7. Bonus: Batman is cooler than most other superheroes who got their powers the easy way.

    Hi Dave,

What a great analogy!  Thanks so much for sharing!  I am actually taking my daughters to the preview of “The Dark Knight”… this evening at Thanksgiving Point!  I will be sure and zone in on these 5 elements that make the “Cape Crusader” so successful!

    Have a great day!

If you do that, then maybe you can write off those tickets as a business expense. ;-)

That means a lot coming from a spiderman fan.

Love your comments. I wonder though if the Joker is off somewhere snickering at the fact technology seems to have infiltrated in unhealthy ways on both sides of the mask.  You see it in restaurants, shopping, etc.   Sometimes technology can get in the way of those thinking processes necessary to finding solutions to problems for instance.   How many ideas come to mind when taking a simple shower? Batman needs to find the off button and share it with the rest of humanity….

Nice, Jane. :-)  Yes technology can be used for good and evil, as with everything else mentioned in this video. It really comes down to us making the choice to focus on those things that are of the most value.

Thanks for sharing such a great video. I learn a lot from these short videos, so quickly.
I am so much in need for an Alfred in my work. Could you please elaborate on 4th point? I didnt get the exact meaning.

Terrific as always Dave. The mask resonated with me. I own a music and drama school and “I live among them”. I see many of my clients out and about and it’s important to have the  ’school Jim” and the “out in public Jim”. Basically I approach it with my values, always as upbeat and friendly as possible.

Btw, I just saw the film with my son – I thought it was a masterpiece.

      Well done, Jim.

Yes I’ve seen it twice all ready. Love it.
