Starting meetings late conditions people to arrive late

Tired of everyone showing up late to meetings? The reason may be simpler than you think.

Do you often start later than planned? Perhaps you do it to be kind to attendees who are running behind. Or perhaps you didn’t arrive early enough to start the meeting prepared.

Whatever the reason, starting late sets the expectation that it’s okay to arrive late. In fact, starting late effectively punishes people for arriving on time! Ouch.

The next thing you know, you’ve created a habit that encourages EVERYONE to arrive late.

Instead, try the following tips to set the right expectations:

1. As the leader, you should arrive several minutes early to prepare ahead of time.

2. Send out a meeting reminder the day before, with a gentle reminder of the start time.

3. Keep meetings brief and on topic with an agenda to avoid running over, as well.

This shows that you respect everyone’s time, and they’ll respect yours in return by showing up on time.
