Why Most Problem Solving is Wasted Time

Entrepreneurs are skilled problem solvers—putting out fires each and every day of the week. Yet the ability to extinguish isn’t nearly as important as the ability to distinguish.

Take a brief 87 seconds to focus on the important difference between simple sparks, and boisterous blazes in your small business. Then you’ll add focus—not fuel—to the fire.

Video transcription:

In my book, The Focused Business, I talk about chaos being the number one killer of small business.

One way that chaos manifests itself is when business owners try to solve every single problem within their business–when they don’t differentiate between a pattern and an incident.

An incident is something that happens once. For instance, an employee who’s usually on time showing up late one time.

A pattern, on the other hand, is when something has happened more than once. The example, of course, would be the employee showing up repeatedly late to work.

In general, you want to ignore incidents and process and work on patterns. Patterns are systemic problems that can be solved. Incidents are just one time things that you should let go of.

So, what I’d like you to share in the comments section below are two things. Number one, what’s one thing that’s bothering you in your business? And number two, is it an incident or a pattern?

Also, if you’ve got a question you’d like me to answer in a future video, ask that below as well.

Thanks for watching and don’t sweat the small stuff.
