Text transcript:

One group that probably struggles with the issue of multitasking the most and I find myself helping quite a bit are moms. Whether they are stay-at-home moms or whether they are a woman who has a career and they are also acting as a mom, they have a unique set of challenges, because they are pulled in so many different directions. There are so many demands on their time.

So, what advice can I give for women who are really struggling with the issue of multitasking, but understand that it needs to stop?

Number one is: understand that your value is not determined by your busyness. You do not need to do multiple things at the same time. In fact, you are going to get more things done when you focus on one thing at a time; but first you have to be okay with that idea, because I work with a lot of people men and women who define themselves by the fact that they are very, very busy people. If you continue to define yourself by being a busy person then it is going to be very hard for you to overcome this

The second piece of advice that I would say is use a calendar as a time budget. It is very common for someone who is working at home—again, whether you are a mom or whether you are a dad or just a single person and you are working at home—it is very easy to just let your schedule fly all over the place. You just sort of go with the flow as things come in. Yes, you need to leave room in your schedule for the unexpected, but you also need to schedule what you can schedule and get your self into a rhythm for the week rather than allowing yourself to be dictated to by what the world is telling you, you should do with your time. So, make sure that you don’t define yourself by being busy and start using a calendar as a time budget. And those are great places to start.
