Invest in your workspace productivity

Think working from home is as simple as rolling out of bed and opening a laptop? Think again.

First, kudos to you if you have the privilege of working from home. In the words of Obi-Wan Kenobi, “You’ve taken your first step into a larger world.” Working from home, either temporarily or permanently, can be a boon for your commute, productivity, and your personal life. It’s certainly done that for me and my career!

However, it can also be a complete boondoggle. Without a fully furnished home office, you may be sabotaging your time and negatively impacting your work.

So, when does a home transform into “home office”? Take a look around you. Are you laying supine on a couch with your laptop on your stomach? Is the tiny keyboard on your Ultrabook digging you a carpel tunnel to China? Do you have to wander the house trying to find the scissors that your kids “borrowed”—again? If so, you’re a long way from a home office.

It’s true that transforming your space into a real office takes money. At a corporate office, chairs, ergonomic keyboards, and widescreen monitors are package deals. But don’t let the cost scare you. It’s a big investment, yet just a 2% gain in productivity can net you an extra week’s worth of yearly productivity.

Having just the right tools drastically improved my success and it might just do the same for you. To learn more, check out my newest course: Time Management: Working from Home.

So, what do you think? Is your workspace set up for productivity? Are you more productive—or less productive—when you work from home?
