How do you create a personal vision statement?

A vision statement isn’t just a thought or dream. A truly useful vision statement is about one page long, lays out the basic groundwork of what you want for yourself, and serves as your north star on a regular basis, helping guide your decision-making process.

If you haven’t made a vision statement before, you’ve come to the right place. With a few simple and purposeful steps, you can create a vision statement that will bring value and guidance to your life.

First, find a quiet place where you can sit and think. A place that’s both inspirational and free from interruptions is important.

Take five minutes and sit with yourself. You’ll want to have a clear mind before beginning.

Next, think about the next five years or so, and write the answers to these questions.

  • What do I want to become?
  • What do I want to do?
  • What do I want to have?

Your personal vision statement is how you want to see your future. It should keep you grounded, focused, and inspired whenever you need it. It can also guide your judgment when you feel as though you’ve reached a crossroads.

Following the above steps will help you arrive at a personal vision statement that you can return to again and again.

What’s something you want five years from now? Please share it in the comments below.
