Get to know your team by asking thoughtful questions

Working from home doesn’t have to be lonely. You can build a stronger connection with your team with just a bit of effort—despite not being in person.

One of my favorite ways is by asking thoughtful questions. Here are a few that I find helpful in developing a positive relationship:

• What can I do to make your job easier?
• What’s a hobby you enjoy doing after work?
• Is there anything you’d like to see done differently with the team?
• If you could travel to any country, where would you go?

Some questions can be about getting to know each other, while others can encourage ideas on improving your team efficiency. The idea is to start an open dialogue that includes every team member.

How do you build a connection with your remote teammates?

While it’s nice to meet face-to-face, we don’t always have that option. This doesn’t mean our relationships at work have to suffer. I share advice I’ve used for years in my course, Building Relationships While Working from Home. You can find it on LinkedIn Learning at davecrenshaw.com/relationships.
