How your vision creates a map for success

Why is having a vision important? A vision is like a map. Without it, you’re likely to lose your way and get lost.

Recently, a poll I conducted revealed that 47% of people don’t have a vision. Many even commented that they felt a vision restricts their freedom or adds stress to their life.

A vision shouldn’t be viewed as a negative, controlling tool. In fact, it can add meaning to your work day! While your values define the reasons why you do something, your vision determines the where and when part of your life plan. It gives you a sense of direction.

If you could flash forward five years from now, what do you HOPE your life looks like? That dream is your vision! Most of us have one, even if we don’t formally recognize it.

A vision works best when clearly established though. Take your dream above and work backwards to lay out the actions required to reach that goal. By doing so, you will stay more focused and motivated.

Why is that?

Well, for one, it’s easier to say no to those lower value activities and shiny distractions. It’s also much easier to make daily plans when you have a specific destination in mind.

That being said, you can make adjustments as needed. Your future isn’t set in stone simply by having a vision. I recommend reviewing it quarterly to ensure you’re staying on track, as well as confirming if the vision is still right for you.

What’s just ONE thing you’d put in your five-year vision?

Many people get overwhelmed by the idea of creating a vision. The good news is, it’s actually quite easy! I share my process for developing a personal vision, along with other aspects of making work meaningful, in my course on LinkedIn Learning, How to Make Work More Meaningful.
