How to Delegate Effectively in a Small Business

Entrepreneurs are natural-born do-it-yourselfers, tackling each and every task that comes their way. And while that attitude is admirable, it can be pretty ineffective, too.

The ability to delegate is an essential tool for small business success. Yet business owners often believe no one can do as well as you can.

Instead, what we want to do is have you focused on your Most Valuable Positions. Consider an organization chart; [your MVAs are] the two positions on the chart that you do the best and cost you the most to have someone else to do. Then everything else, we delegate.

Here are three D’s that will help you get started with delegation:

The first D is document. Instead of just telling people verbally what to do, let’s put it into a written document, a system that people can follow.

The second is demonstrate. We don’t want to assume that someone will be able to read something on a piece of paper and know how it’s done. No! We want to show them, give them an example of how it’s done.

And number three is deadline. We give people a clear deadline of when things are supposed to be done and then we follow-up with them on that deadline.
