Invaluable Tip: How will you use Headstart Week 2011?

If you know me personally, you’ll know I’m a big American football fan.  One of the athletes I admire most is Steve Young. Among other admirable traits, he has always been known for his exceptional work ethic. In college, he rose from the bottom of the depth chart to becoming a starting quarterback by always being the first to practice and always being the last to leave.

You have an opportunity to do something very much like that in just over a month. There is a special window of time that is open to you to allow you “climb the depth chart” of your career and business by getting a headstart on 2011. I call this special window of time that everyone has the “Headstart Week”.

What is the Headstart Week?

Headstart week is that window of time between Christmas and New Year’s. This year in particular, I mark Headstart week as beginning on Monday, December 27 and ending Thursday, December 30—so just four days.

During this unique window of time most businesses are down—especially in western culture. People are taking a break, relaxing, spending time with family.

The reason why this time is so critical to your productivity is because of one thing: you are less likely at this time of the year to be interrupted than any other time! For those of you who have read my book, The Myth of Multitasking, you’ll understand why this is so critical: less switching and less switching cost.

It’s the perfect time of the year to work on your personal systems, to do business development work, and to prepare in advance for the coming year.

In fact, if you don’t set aside as least a day or two during this Headstart week, you’ll roll right back into the daily grind with NO IMPROVEMENTS from 2010. Just more of the same.

So, prepare yourself well in advance of this special week. I’d like to invite you to do two things, right now:

  1. Pull out your calendar right now and schedule one or two days during Headstart Week to devote to preparing yourself and your business for the coming year. Need a hint? Dec 29-30 would be a great couple of days!
  2. Comment on this page and let everyone know that you’ve scheduled the days and what you plan to do with the time.
