How to stop email from taking over your day

I’m in Phoenix, Arizona about to do a workshop with Camden Living on the Myth of Multitasking. If you aren’t familiar with what I teach on this topic or in my course Time Management Fundamentals, it’s all about how we lose SO much time switching back and forth between tasks. We lose an entire work week a month due to this bad habit! I am going to be teaching the people of Camden Living some switchbusters to avoid getting into the trap of multitasking, and I’d like to share one of them with you now.

Emails. We all get them, and many of us are addicted to checking our inboxes. Studies have even compared the compulsion to gambling, where we continually check emails hoping to hit the jackpot eventually. The constant interruption wreaks havoc on our time management!

There are two parts to this switchbuster for tackling the email epidemic. The first part is checking your email. Set specific times during the day for this task and stick to it. You don’t always need to respond to emails at this step—ask yourself if it can wait until your processing time for a response or action.

The second part is the actual processing. Schedule a regular, weekly time to process your email inbox and bring it back to zero.

If you are interested in bringing me in to speak with your group, you can get more information at DaveCrenshaw.com/speak. Have a great day and thanks for listening!
