The Myth of Self-Motivation

Entrepreneurs are big believers in the elusive white unicorn: that self-motivated employee that can tackle each task perfectly with minimal training or questions. But self-motivation isn’t magical–it’s mythical, and deceivingly unreliable.

That’s why my small business slice helps you owners focus your energy on practical ways to motivate your employees. And you don’t even need a magic wand.

Often when business owners go to hire a new employee, they list as one of the traits they are trying to get is someone who is self-motivated.

This is unnecessary. The truth is everyone is self-motivated. Even addicts are motivated to get the next fix for themselves.

No! In management, what really matters is finding out what they want most and connecting it with what you want them to do.

The question is—how well do you know what your employees know and how well are you connecting the day to day efforts of their job with what they want most?

You need to help them make that connection because they’re not going to make it on their own.

So I’d like you to answer two questions in the comments below. On the scale of zero to ten, how well do you know the individual motivation of each employee? And on a scale of zero to ten, how well are you connecting their day to day work with that personal motivation?

And if you’ve got a question you’d like me to answer in a future video, ask that below as well.

Thanks for watching. Now go make that connection.
